Consulting & Promotional Strategy
I have met hundreds of filmakers who put their hearts and souls into their art with a desire to have it seen and hopefully recover some costs but time and again, they leave themselves to the mercy of the film festivals. Many end up further in debt than when they started out. I could have been in this same situation, if it had not been for the many invitations to tour my film at college campuses. I started blogging about it because the promotional and booking strategy is easily repeatable and I enjoy consulting. I also am fond of filmmakers who I find to be very passionate and dedicated individuals.
You can read my blog for more how-to details, but the "Cliffs Notes" version is that we generated leads by doing online research, reaching out cold and attending conferences. I produced email and phone marketing campaigns targeted at specific academic departments. From there, we got fully paid trips to present in CA, DC, FL, MD, MN, NY, WI, TN and Ontario Canada. For some gigs, rather than making the trek, we showed up on Skype in places like CO, HI and ME. It was always wonderful to connect with audiences in meaningful post-screening dialogue and nice to receive honorarium & screening fees for the work, besides! The blog is geared towards documentary filmmakers but the principals apply to others who do public presentations and are looking to establish thought-leadership in their field.
