PDXAUX Meetup - Documentary, Preso & Happy Hours - Q3 & Q4

Local Accessibility Spotlight

There is plenty happening forUX and the digital accessibility scene here in Portland - we even got mentioned in the Filter Digital blog "12 LOCAL UX GROUPS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT" cool!  -

A few highlights for our local scene include a tech company and a documentary. Our Meetup got to do a sneak peak of the film and hear from the project benefactor.

"Imagine If" Web Accessibility Documentary

"Imagine If: A Story of Accessibility" is a documentary following Cory Klatik, a UX designer and his guide dog, Vine. Cory talks about his use of various computers, devices and assistive technology. Cory and filmmaker Chris Higgins were onsite for a Q&A. Many people came with great questions!

Lucid Meetings: Industry Accessibility Success Story

There was also a short presentation by John Keith from Lucid Meetings - a Portland tech company that specializes in online meeting services and professional meeting software. In 2013 they were asked by ICANN to improve the accessibility of their platform. They brought on Simply Accessible to guide them through the final parts of this process and then went on to fund Chris' film project. It was interesting to hear about their process working a11y into their product which ultimately inspired them to fund the doc.

Two Happy Hours - at Green Dragon, of Course!

  • In July we had a great turnout and good conversation. This was Megan Lawrence's last Meetup with us as co-host. She now has a snazzy job working with Jenny Lay-Flurrie at Microsoft. We hope to have Megan back as a guest presenter in the future!
  • December 5th we will be meeting to discuss accessibility challenges and goals for the new year. Eliza and Phyllis Petteys will share their experiences at the Accessing Higher Ground conference.
